After-School Program

CEF partners with the Chester Upland School District (CUSD) to provide after-
school programming. The Chester High School (CHS) site will serve a minimum of
135-145 9th-12th grade students from CHS and Smedley. The
School-To-
Career Program combines regular after-school sessions with job-readiness
programming and paid summer work experiences.

Tutoring and homework assistance will be provided in accordance to the
instructional plan developed for each student and will focus on reading, writing,
math, and study strategies. Clubs and other enriching cultural and recreational
activities and trips are important components of the program.

The goals of the program are to:
  • Increase student achievement in Reading, Writing and  Mathematics
  • Improve school-related attitudes, behaviors and skills
  • Increase parental involvement
  • Increase graduation rate of participants in program

After-school students will continue to utilize two, school district endorsed,
internet-based programs, Achieve 3000 and Apangea, to help them improve in
reading and math. This year, additional activities for high school students include
PHEAA Education Planner Career Inventory Survey Series, Book Club, Poetry
Club, 100 Book Challenge, Dating and Relationships workshops, trips to
museums and colleges, bowling, and a Youth Summit in May. Last year, a trip to
Washington D.C. was the final recognition for 187 high school students who
achieved their goals of 30-90 days of after-school attendance, good behavior
and improved grades during the 2008-09 school year. We will continue to
provide this annual trip as a recognition activity for this school year.

                       Additional Summer Programming

Each summer, CEF hosts 50-100 additional Chester Upland School District
students, who are ineligible for the paid summer work-experience. These
students participate in a variety of college courses and workshops through
Widener University and Delaware County Community College, tutoring and
academic skill-building sessions at CEF facilities and a wide-range of enrichment
activities.
