Elementary and Middle School Programs

Summer Fun and Education Calendar
(# of students:  Approximately 7,000)

Brief Program Description:
Chester Education
Foundation produces a calendar to link parents to
summer-time, enrichment/educational programs for
elementary school-aged children. This premier calendar detailed all
of the informal and formal educational and recreational programs
that were available throughout the community including the school
district’s Dare to Soar Program, at Cheyney University through a
Federal 21st Century Learning Center grant. Other examples of
programs: Crozer Library, Chess Club at Community Hospital,
Fuzzy Foods and Multiplying Microbes, through Penn State
Cooperative Extension, Theater Camp for Kids I and Summer
Shakespeare Camp at the Hedgerow Theater, the Summer Science
Day Camp, at the Center for Self Development, and Brother to
Brother Mentoring at the Family Center.

Middle Schools Healthy Futures Program
(# of Students:  Approximately  1,600)

Brief Program Description:
One-day health career fairs
with a dual focus:  (1) to teach health related skills such
as CPR, understanding blood pressure, proper dental
care, and drug avoidance and (2) to inform students
about the Chester High School Health Academy and
potential careers in the field of health.  Health care
professionals from approximately twenty (20) agencies
make presentations and talk about their careers.  One
innovative feature of the program is that health science
topics are presented in an interactive format taught by
health science practitioners who are able to link
classroom learning with real world experiences.

The second innovative feature of the program is the use
of Chester High School Health Academy students to
conduct some of the presentations and to help coordinate
the day’s activities.  The high school students are not
only using the practical skills they have learned, such as
blood pressure measurement, they are in turn, teaching
these skills.

SKILLS College

Brief Program Description:
This research-based model
uses curriculum-based instruction, and pre and post
measurement of skills attainment.  SKILLS is primarily an
after-school and summer enrichment program for middle
school, and elementary students, utilizing a research-
based “Promising Approach”, Participate and Learn Skills,
(PALS).  An innovative element of the SKILLS College is
that students have an opportunity to experience fun and
learn new skills that develop their academic and social
abilities.  Web Development, Scuba Diving, Drama, Art,
Band Camp, Trial by Jury, African Dance, Chess, and
History Tours are some of the courses that were taught
during the past year.

One unique component of the program last year was the
inclusion of Junior Achievement. Participated in Junior
Achievement and the Junior Achievement Exchange City.
CUSD sixth and fifth graders teachers received training in
business, civics, and marketing so that they could teach
the Junior Achievement curriculum in the classroom over
a period of two months.  In May, all of the students
visited the new Junior Achievement Exchange City in
Chester to operate a town for a day and practice all of their new
business skills.

Reading Club

Brief program Description:
A teacher-facilitated reading
club for 4th and 5th grade students.  Students select
from a list of books that complement the reading
instruction curriculum and discuss with their peers.  The
goal of the program is to foster a love of reading,
sharpen comprehension and critical thinking skills, and enhance the
student’s communication skills.

Computer Instruction: Internet Research and Web-
Design

Brief Program Description:
CEF provides specialized
computer instruction by Information Technology (IT)
professionals.  This innovative use of IT professionals as
instructors is unique to this program.  Classes in basic,
intermediate, and advanced computer skills are available,
as well as access to free computer lab time.  Popular
courses are Internet Research and Web-design.  Students
will be able to advance at their own pace through several
