At the Columbus site CEF structures its SKILLS College after-school program on the principles of the research-based Participate and Learn Skills (PALS) program. Using curriculum-based instruction and pre and post assessment strategies CEF’s serves 2nd through 8th grade students. This year, CEF will increase the amount of time that students practice Achieve 3000, an internet- based reading program, and also introduce practice time on the district’s web-based Math tutorial program by providing additional technology resources. CEF plans to supplement students’ access to the district labs by providing Netbook Computers. Enhanced recreational and enrichment activities will be provided throughout the week and special programming, such as Musicopia, and the Franklin Institute’s Traveling Science Show, will be scheduled throughout the year. These special programs along with educational trips will also provide an opportunity for students to invite their parents and siblings to attend fun activities together which will deepen the family and school bonding. Summer Fun and Education Calendar Chester Education Foundation produces a calendar to link parents to free or low-cost summer-time enrichment/educational programs for elementary school-aged children. This premier calendar details many of the informal and formal educational and recreational programs that are available throughout the community including CEF’s SKILL College. Other examples of programs: Crozer Library, Chess Club at Community Hospital, Fuzzy Foods and Multiplying Microbes through Penn State Cooperative Extension, Theater Camp for Kids I and Summer Shakespeare Camp at the Hedgerow Theater, the Summer Science Day Camp, at the Center for Self Development, and Brother to Brother Mentoring at the Family Center. In fall 2009 CEF partnered with the CYC Drug Free Community Initiative to distribute a school-time activities calendar as well. For more information contact Neilda Mott, Program Director. |
